Cambodia (I): Siemp Reap, Ankor Wat, Iona & Together for Cambodia

Si algo podemos corroborar de lo que todo el mundo nos había dicho es que los camboyanos son increíblemente simpáticos y amables. Una curiosidad: Los cajeros expenden dólares y es que en Cambodia se vive báiscamente con ellos, más que con el Real que es la moneda propia.

If we have to agree in one thing about Cambodia with all of thar who told us before is that Cambodia people is amazing: nice and helpful. A curious thing: they use US Dolars and even you can take them from the ATMs, it is more used than their local money.


SIEM REAP

Siem Reap es una ciudad ideal para turistas occidentales que buscan el exotismo de la comidad asiática, estar cerca de Ankor Wat y todas las comodidades a las que están acostumbrados...por lo que no deja de transmitir una sensación de poca autenticidad, a pesar de ser súper agradable para pasar unos días. Y pagamos sólo 1 dólar por dormir en una especia de dormitorio Kemer!! ;)

Una de las grandes cosas fue conocer a Tomás a través de couchsurfing y que nos sacara de marcha, que os hacía falta :)

Siem Reap is a great city for Western tourists who look for Asian food, being close to the temples and their Western comodities...so, in some way, our feeling it is that it is not as authentic as others cities in Asia, but still great for a couple of days. And we paid 1USD for sleeping in a Kemer dormitory he he he.

One of the greatest things in SR was meet Tomás, a Spanish couchsurfer living there who showed us the night life. We had the great party we needed :)


IONA

Tras un trayecto de 12h por acantilados infinitos en Laos (y medio pasaje del bus vomitando) conocimos a Iona, una chica inglesa que trabaja como profesora en ChiangDu, en China. Conectamos tan bien que hemos estado 3 semana viajando juntos :)

After a horrible 12h bus trip bus in a crappy road full of curves (half of the passengers threw up..) we met Iona, an English girl who teaches English in Chiang Du, in China. We really connected so we have been travelling together for the last 3 weeks. We are gonna miss her!!!

JUNTOS POR CAMBODIA

Pero sin duda, junto con los templos, el gran aliciente para nosotros en SR era Lidia Linde y Juntos Por Cambodia. Lidia es ex azafata de Spanair y hasta ahora nos conocíamos sólo por mail, en mi etapa en la compañía ella estaba de excedencia poniendo en marcha el proyecto y yo (JL) me encargué de gestionar varios reportajes sobre el mismo en nuestra revista interna de empresa.

JxC no es un orfanato, es un HOGAR para 40 niños camboyanos. Y es que así es como lo define ella y como nos lo hizo sentir. Sin duda, recomendamos que echéis un ojo al proyecto y si podéis colaborar con él, aún mejor :)

No tenemos fotos de los niños porque en la organización se encargan de preservar su intimidad y que las visitas a la casa no se conviertan en una mera visita turística más, pero sí que tenemos este par de fotos con Lidia y las mujeres del taller de costura de JxC que nos confeccionaron unos jerseys a medida increíbles en menos de 24h!!!

As Temples were the main reason to come to SR, for us was also important because we finally met Lidia Linde and visited Together for Cambodia. Lidia is an ex cabin crew member from Spanair, my ex company. She was already working for her NGO project when I got into the comapny, so our relationship was always by mail till now. I managed some interviews and infos about her work in Cambodia for our Internal Corporate Magazine.

Together for Cambodia is not an orphanage, it is a HOME for 40 Cambodian kids. And it is a real home because they manage it like that and that it is how we felt it. If you have time, we encourage you to have a look to their website and maybe, collaborate with them too :)

We have not pics from the kids as visitors are not allowed to shoot them, Lidia and her colleagues try to keep ther privacy. Visiting orphanges as became an ordinary touristic attraction in Cambodia nowadays. But we have pics with the ladies who work sewing for them clothes...they made us 2 amazing jumpers in less than 24h!!

Angkor Wat

Sin duda, tiene bien merecido ser una de las 7 Maravillas del mundo porque el conjunto de templos es impresionante. Estuvimos 11h pateándolos 8 de los templos y nos quedamos cortos! A las 5AM ya estábamos allí para ver amanecer y salíamos del parque a las 17h...una paliza pero que mereció la pena, entre otras cosas por compartila con Iona y Kia, un persa muy divertido que conocimos en el hostal y al que invitamos a venir con nosotros.

No doubts. Angkor Wat really deserves to be one of the 7th Marvelous buildings in the world. They are amazing. We were there for 11h and visited 8 temples and that was not enough!! At 5AM we were already there for sunrise and stayed there till 17h...really tyring day, but worthy! And our company was amazing too: Iona and Kia, a Perssian guy really funny we met in our hostel and invited him to join us.
