La capital de Cambodia es una ciudad vibrante, más al estilo Saigón (llena de motos por doquier) con ciertos rasgos imperiales (Palacio Real, Museo Nacional, etc) y mercados en cada esquina. Hemos estado a penas 48h pero nos han dado para mucho jejeje.

Entre otras cosas, para descubrir a Cambodian Space Project, un grupo de rock&roll que mezcla letras en Khemer (camboyano) con ritmos occidentales. Una delicia de concierto.

One of the nice things we discovered in PP is Cambodian Space Project a music band that mix Khemer lyrics with Rock&Roll rythms. A delicious concert.

El genocido de los Khemeres Rojos
Cambodia, al igual que otros países vecinos, está marcada por la guerra. Tras liberarse del colonialismo francés, en los '70 el Pol Pot subió al poder en forma de un Comunismo salvaje a través del brazo ejecutor de los Khemeres Rojos.
Toda aquella persona que vivía en la ciudad o era ilustrada era considerada enemiga del Régimen, que buscaba un país de campesinos sin pretensiones y que no tuvieran más aspiraciones que las de cultivar arroz. Todos iguales, sin diferencias d clases. Profesores, médicos (incluso gente que llevaba gafas era sospechosa por ser un signo de inteligencia llevarlas) fueron expulsados de sus hogares de la noche a la mañana, separados de sus familias y, con suerte, reconducidos a zonas rurales donde vivirían como campesinos y serían reeducados en la nueva sociedad.
Los menos afortunados fueron torturados, violados y enterrados en fosas comunes.

La realidad era que el Pol Pot estaba en plena guerra con Vietnam y para poder pagar las armas que China les cedía necesitaban a toda la población cultivando arroz. Un arroz que iba íntegramente para China mientras los camboyanos se morían de hambre.
Phom Phen ofrece de hecho varios escenarios donde recordar la tragedia como los Campos de fusilamiento y la prisión S21 (antigua escuela de primaria que se convirtió en centro de tortura).

Cambodia, as neighbour countries, its related to a War Past. After breaking up with French Colonialism, in the 70's Pol Pots got control over the country in a such a Wild Comunism way throught Red Khemer power.
Every single citizen who lived in the city or had studies and a career was consider an enemy. Red Khemer looked for a country of farmers, with no expectations, just devoted to farm and live in a equal class society. The only goal was to farm rice. Teachers, doctors (even those who weared glasses, as they were considered a signal of intelligence) were forced to leave their homes and cities and go in-land, to live in villages and farms. They were supossed to be re-educated in the new Khemer society. And those were the lucky ones.
The unlucky people was tortured, raped or killed and buried in comunal holes.

The truth was that for paying the war against Vietnam, Cambodia's Pol Pot had to pay a high price to Chine for the weapon. And the way to pay Chinese help back was with rice, the same rice that thousand of people was farming with no chance to eat it.
In fact, Phnom Phen offers several places to remind this dark part of Cambodia's History such S21 (an ex school converted in a torture jail) or the killing fields.

Sin duda, no hay mejor forma de conocer cualquier historia que en la voz de sus protagonistas. Luong Ung era una niña de 5 años cuando los Khemeres Rojos la obligaron a ella y a su familia a dejar su ciudad y emigrar al campo, donde serían reeducados bajo las normas de la nueva sociedad Khemer. Treinta años después rememora desde los ojos de la niña que era como entre otras cosas, fue entrenada como niño soldado o su familia fue castigada y disuelta en este fantástico libro (que nos hemos leído estos días y recomendamos...).

The best way to know any kind of story is by those who lived (or surived) it. Luong Ung was a 5 years old child when Red Khemer forced her family to leave their city and move in-land where they would be re-educated in the values of the new Khemer society. 30 years later, she explains they way she lived it being a kid, forced to leave her family and become a soldier-kid. In this great book we have read these days (and recomend anyone to read) you can feel the pain of all the survivors.
